Typical features:
o Lots of cells bound closely together
o Not much extracellular material
o Exposed and attached surfaces
o Epithelia rest on a basement membrane
o Avascular - no bloody supply (how to they get their nutrients and remove their
waste)
o Regenerative
5.11 Describe the relationship between the amount of cytoplasm of an epithelial cell and the
amount of work done by such cells
More cytoplasm = more mitochondria = more active transport
Squamous = small amount of cytoplasm
Cuboidal = bit more of cytoplasm
Columnar = most amount of cytoplasm
