BIOL123 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Epithelium, Muscle Tissue, Connective Tissue
d) Keratin
• Protein that fills the surface cells and makes the water resistant
5.8 List the four types of tissue found in the human body
• Epithelial tissue
• Connective tissue
• Muscle tissue
• Nerve tissue
5.9 List the functions of epithelial membranes and predict the location of epithelial
membranes
• Epithelium:
o Lining tissue:
• Covers all internal and external exposed surfaces of the bod
• Most glands are epithelial in nature
o Functions:
• Protection:
▪ Protects underlying tissues against dehydration, chemical and
mechanical damage
• Selective barriers:
▪ Able to facilitate or prevent passage of materials across the surfaces
covered
▪ Able to modify internal and external stimuli (hormones, physical
stress)
• Provide sensation:
▪ Touch from the skin, smell, taste, sight, hearing (specialised forms of
epithelia)
• Specialised secretions from glands:
▪ Sweat
▪ Hormones
▪ Enzymes
• Layered or stratified epithelium:
▪ Multiple layers of cells resting on a basement membrane
▪ Designed to resist mechanical abrasion
▪ Surface cells may be a different shape to the deeper cells
