BIOL123 Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: Adipose Tissue, Loose Connective Tissue, Collagen
• Areolar tissue:
o Only connective tissue proper that contains all cell types
o Acute inflammatory response
o Connective tissue proper underlying all body surfaces
• Adipose tissue:
o Fat cells predominate
o Functions to:
• Insulate against heat loss
• Provide mechanical support
• Store energy
• Release energy
o Regional differences in distribution based on age and gender
• Dense irregular connective tissue:
o Contains collagen and elastic fibres, randomly arranged with no consistent pattern
o Functions to protect and support organs where stress is applied from many
directions
o E.g. coverings of bone, deepest layers of skin
• Dense regular connective tissue:
o Highly structured arrangement
o Fibres lie parallel to one another, aligned to resist stretching
o E.g. tendon and ligament
