Must be stored in tightly closed dark containers that are dated from when they are first opened. Gtn rapidly degrades when exposed to light, heat or moisture. Tablets that are not used in 3 months must be discarded. Gtn has to be administered in a way that avoids first pass. Common ways include: sublingual (under the tongue) tablets, lingual spray, intravenously, via patches. It can be repeated 3 times at 5 minute intervals before you should call for help. Commonly given to treat angina or myocardial infarction. Increases blood perfusion to the heart muscle. Gtn goes into the smooth muscle of your blood vessels. This decreases the amount of calcium in your muscle cells. Low doses of gtn cause your veins to dilate. This means means you have a decreased venous return (less blood returning to your heart). Less blood returning to the heart means less preload (aka end diastolic volume).
