Document Summary

Lerner et al. (2005) propose a positive youth development framework. Pyd: want we wish for teens to develop (placing teens on a positive trajectory) What is adolescent: adolescents occupy the border zones between the mythic poles of adult/child, sexual/asexual, rational/emotional, civilized/savage, and productive/unproductive. Common mental health disorders in teens: depression, anxiety, behavioural disorders, understanding & fighting stigma. Negative mental health risk behaviours: drinking alcohol. Sedentary lifestyle: healthy diet has also been shown to decrease in adolescents. Week 4 lecture 4: eat few fruits and vegetables. Fast food: consume large amounts of sugary drinks. Changes in thinking self-absorbed (egocentric) comorbid with major life transitions: brain system differences rational vs impulsive. When compared with boys, girls report: greater depressed mood, body shame, habitual body monitoring, appearance anxiety, disordered eating. Puberty timing: early maturing boys: all in all, usually a good deal. Not perceived as an advantage at the time: tend to lead and dominate, good in sports, popular.
