ANAT week 9 LA  Surface Anatomy of the Lower Limb
Surface Anatomy
- The study of anatomical features which can be seen with the skin intact
- Looking at the configuration of surface landmarks in relation to the deeper
structures
- Static and dynamic
Palpation
- To feel, examine or explore by touch
- Used to acquire objective information which can help lead to diagnosis
- High level of tactile sensitivity in our fingertips
- Our hands are very well equipped to pick up information:
oTension/irritability, elasticity, texture, temperature, surface humidity
- Obtaining information through touch is a skill  lots of practice is required
- Can only see obturator externus and internus if adductors are cut  therefore
wouldn’t be a surface anatomy question
oMuch more likely for the answer to a surface anatomy question to be a
superficial structure
Bony Landmarks
- Pelvis:
oASIS
oIliac crest
oPSIS
oIschial tuberosity
- Femur:
oGreater trochanter
About 10cm below the most lateral part of the iliac crest
oMedial condyle
oLateral condyle
oAdductor tubercle
oJoint line of the knee
- Joint line of knee is most easily felt when knee is at about 45 degrees flexion
- Tibia:

oTibial condyles
oTibial tuberosity
oGerdy’s tubercle
Can palpate but probably wouldn’t be able to see in a photo
oMedial malleolus
- Fibula:
oHead
oLateral malleolus
- Tarsals:
oTalus (more palpation than being able to see on a photo)
oCalcaneus
oNavicular (more palpation that being able to see on a photo)
oCuboid (more palpation than being able to see on a photo)
- Metatarsals:
oHeads
oTuberosity on base of the 5th

Looking at the configuration of surface landmarks in relation to the deeper structures. Used to acquire objective information which can help lead to diagnosis. High level of tactile sensitivity in our fingertips. Our hands are very well equipped to pick up information: tension/irritability, elasticity, texture, temperature, surface humidity. Obtaining information through touch is a skill lots of practice is required. Can only see obturator externus and internus if adductors are cut therefore wouldn"t be a surface anatomy question: much more likely for the answer to a surface anatomy question to be a superficial structure. Pelvis: asis, iliac crest, psis, ischial tuberosity. About 10cm below the most lateral part of the iliac crest: medial condyle, lateral condyle, adductor tubercle, joint line of the knee.
