ANAT week 10 LA  Nerve Supply of the Lower Limb
The Nervous System
- Bodies control centre and communication network
- Senses changes, interprets changes and responds to changes
oSenses change either in body or in environment
- Most rapid method of maintaining homeostasis
- Highly specialised cells (neurons) that are designed to transmit information around
the body  neurons make up nerve tissue
oSensory neurons transmit information about conditions inside and outside
the body
oMotor neurons transmit information that controls the activity of muscle and
glands
- Glial/support cells  provide protection and nutrition for nerves
The Central Nervous System
- Central nervous system (CNS)  brain and co-located structures, spinal cord
oAll protected by bones of the axial skeleton
Peripheral Nervous System
- PNS  nerves that connect the CNS to the peripheral structures (eg. Skin, muscle and
glands)
oSubdivided into an afferent and efferent system
- Afferent fibres  message is going from peripheral structures to brain/spinal cord
- Efferent fibres  message is going from brain or spinal cord to peripheral structures
- Cranial nerves
oNerves that emerge directly from the brain or the brainstem
oLeave brain via foramen
oNumbered by order they leave the brain anteriorly to posteriorly
o12 pairs, named and numbered
oSome are afferent, some are sensory
oSupply the musculoskeletal structures of the head and neck
oSupply the viscera of the thorax and abdomen
- Spinal nerves
oNerves that emerge from the spinal cord
o31 pairs, each is numbered according to the place where it emerges from the
spinal cord and vertebral column

- Anterior root and posterior root
- Anterior root and posterior root unite to make spinal nerve
- Spinal nerve is made up of sensory and motor fibres
- Exits vertebral column through intervertebral foramen
- Once exited, it splits into ventral and dorsal ramus

Document Summary

Anat week 10 la nerve supply of the lower limb. Senses changes, interprets changes and responds to changes: senses change either in body or in environment. Glial/support cells provide protection and nutrition for nerves. Central nervous system (cns) brain and co-located structures, spinal cord: all protected by bones of the axial skeleton. Pns nerves that connect the cns to the peripheral structures (eg. skin, muscle and glands: subdivided into an afferent and efferent system. Afferent fibres message is going from peripheral structures to brain/spinal cord. Efferent fibres message is going from brain or spinal cord to peripheral structures. Spinal nerves: nerves that emerge from the spinal cord, 31 pairs, each is numbered according to the place where it emerges from the spinal cord and vertebral column. 8 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 sacral, 1 coccygeal: supply the structures of the trunk wall and the limbs. Anterior root and posterior root unite to make spinal nerve.
