PHTY201 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Inferior Frontal Gyrus, Superior Frontal Gyrus, Inferior Temporal Gyrus
Document Summary
It exists of two hemispheres separated by longitudinal fissures: the cerebral hemispheres are joined by the corpus callosum (band of nerve fibers, the corpus callosum is located at the bottom of the longitudinal fissure between the two hemispheres. It helps the hemispheres communicate: sulci (furrows) and gyri (folded ridges) of the cerebral cortex increase the surface area and hence processing power of the cortex. 3. 2 define the terms cortex and medullary white matter of the cerebral hemispheres and identify these structures: cortex, this is the cerebrums (brains) outer layer of neural tissue. It is divided into two cortices left and right cerebral hemispheres. Most cells do not send axons out. Sulcus enables more cell bodies to be present. Sensory and motor areas talk to each other: medullary white matter, the medulla is the lowest part of the brain and the lower portion of the brainstem. It consists of both white matter (myelinated) and unmyelinated (grey matter) nerve fibres.
