Lecture 1: physiotherapy assessment, management and evaluation of interventions for. Children are different from adults: anatomical, physiological, developmental and behavioural. Communication: children need to be listened to, believed & given some control of what is happening to them. Establish trust/rapport with child and parents before putting hands on child. Nursing/medical staff re recent progress: progress overnight, stability, tolerance to handling, feeding and rest to plan timing of physio input, recent investigations e. g. cxr, management plan e. g. weaning, extubation etc. Liaise with domiciliary care team (longer term) Observation: respiratory support, ventilation mode and settings, analgesia, consciousness. Inspection of child: breathing pattern, respiratory rate, work of breathing/respiratory effort, colour, activity level and consciousness, attachments and incisions, posture and movements. Objective assessment: upper respiratory secretions, tactile fremitus, auscultation, observed or elicited cough, other objective measures as indicated e. g. exercise tolerance, breathlessness, muscle length/strength, respiratory mm strength, motor development ability.
