DOH100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Collagen, Apatite, Nanometre
Document Summary
Most differentiated odontoblasts align at epithelial-mesenchymal interface (periphery of dental pulp underneath the ameloblasts) Undifferentiated cells are recalled to go up to give required dentine in case of injury (tertiary dentine) in case cells are injured. They migrate upward to lay down tertiary dentine. This is unlike ameloblastic processes (no reserve for killed cells) Ameloblasts don"t have a process apart from tp. Odontoblastic cell as it migrates toward pulp sends a process inside a channel called a tubule. Thus dentine is tubular and porous unlike enamel which is solid. The cell that formed dentine still has its long process inside the formed dentine meaning there is a strong relationship between the dental pulp and dentine. Differentiated cells found at periphery of dental papilla. Upon division daughter cells in contact with basement membrane become pre-odontoblasts. Differentiation starts at cusp tips or incisal edge then on the margins of the crown.
