Document Summary

Tubules at arrow and a is peritubular or intra are the walls. Between the tubules are the intertubular dentine. Product of secretion of odontoblastic process odontoblast and plasma proteins that have diffused along cell membrane. Walls have the secretion thus different structure. Age related (esp near root apices) - forensic application. Caries - reprecipitation of minerals - the tubules get occluded. Tubules contain fluids and nerves as well as odontoblastic process. Tooth already been in function thus much slower, down regulated, more organised deposition. Thus old people pulp space is very small due to deposition of secondary dentine. Physiological, due to age not due to trauma. Asymmetric - roof and floor > sides. Change in direction of tubules (contour line of own) but continuous with those of primary dentine as the same cell is responsible for both dentines. Severe stimuli leads to pulp necrosis/inflammation of pulp which requires root canal treatment.
