Document Summary

Short-lived action potentials cease when the stimuli dissipate. Voluntary (via cerebrum) and involuntary (via somatic and autonomic reflexes) Prolonged hormones stay in the body and continue to work even after the immediate stimuli dissipate. Peripheral nervous system: the nervous tissue outside of the brain and spinal cord; consists of the 12 pairs of cranial nerves and 31 pairs of spinal nerves. There are four main structures in the brain: cerebrum, diencephalon, brainstem, cerebellum. If we cut the cerebrum coronally, the large majority of what we see is the cerebral cortex. In the cerebral cortex interneurons interpret the stimulus and coordinate a response. This response could include the movement of a muscle or secretion from a gland. Therefore, for response that we want to occur rapidly, we want the fewest number of neurons and synapses involved as possible. Reflexes are an automatic response to a stimulus that occurs without conscious thought to maintain homeostasis.
