PAED3000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Cerebellum, Reticular Formation, Drools
Document Summary
What is sensory integration (si): sensory integration is the process of organising input from each of our sensory systems and from the environment, so that we interact appropriately with our environment. Sensory integration (si) theory: originally developed by jean ayres. It is the integration of information from each sensory system that makes us functional i. e. enables us to respond appropriately to what is happening in our environment. Sensory integration dysfunction: occurs when the brain is not able to organise sensory information for use, child may fail to develop foundation skills, no diagnostic tests- can observe and interpret. Difficulties occur in 3 main areas: sensory modulation difficulties-this lecture, sensory discrimination difficulties- next week, sensory motor difficulties- next week. Sensory modulation: allows us to attend to and discard sensory input so that we focus on what is relevant, good fit between the child"s sensory modulation and environment= appropriate response to sensation. Impulse control: frustration tolerance, balance of emotional reactions.
