Document Summary

A computer must know which application needs to send packets to within itself. The transport layer protocol is responsible for this. Two problems with ip the transport layer addresses: reliability, delivering messages to particular processes at a host. The transport layer is responsible for end-to-end delivery of messages by setting up connections (sometimes called sessions or virtual circuits) Responsible for segmentation and reassembly of a message: breaks the message into smaller pieces at the sending end, reassembles them to the original form at the receiving end. Transport layer is basically responsible for transporting data from place-to-place safely. It handles error control as well (even though data link layer does it already) because the data li(cid:374)k la(cid:455)er does(cid:374)"t reall(cid:455) (cid:272)o(cid:448)er the (cid:272)orre(cid:272)t reasse(cid:373)(cid:271)l(cid:455) of a (cid:373)essage. Two main protocols in tcp/ip for the transport layer: transmission control protocol (tcp): connection-oriented reliable communication.
