Document Summary

3 main parts nasopharynx, oropharynx and laryngopharanyx. Sling of muscles with attachments anteriorly going down trachea + larynx , close the posterior aspect of nose, mouth and larynx = constrictors. Pharyngobasilar fascia extends along length between layers of muscles and acts to close of spaces between muscles. Superior constrictor = from median raphe (connective tissue on cheek) & Middle constrictor = (from hyoid bone) to sling posteriorly, most of lateral surface of naso and oropharynx. Inferior constrictor = attaches to thyroid cartilages, projects posteriorly and joins in midline. Cricopharyngeus = part of inferior, functionally the same but has a di erent name because has its own nerve branch. Salpingopharyngeus = cartilaginous part of auditory tube to muscular sling, open up auditory tube for pressure equalisation (yawning) Palatopharyngeus = soft palate to rest of pharynx, depress soft palate. Stylopharyngeus = styloid process (external to pharynx), enters pharynx between superior and middle constrictors, small head movement.
