Organisational behaviour(ob) is a field of study that investigates the impact that individuals, groups and structure have on behaviour within organisations, for the purpose of applying such knowledge towards improving an organisation s effectiveness. Managers are individuals who achieve goals through other people. Organisation is a consciously coordinated social unit, composed of two or more people, that functions on a relatively continuous basis to achieve a common goal or set of goals. Principles of scientific management: managers specify every element of an employee s work, managers train employees, ensuring all work is done according to their specifications. Management 1) standardisation of task: financial rewards is main motivator. 3) workers are cogs in the machine. 4) managers thing and workers do. Legacy of hrm: quality of an employee s working life, social aspects. Informal and formal are different: more to motivation than money. Planning is a process that includes defining goals, establishing strategy and developing plans to coordinate activities.
