PSYC20006 - DEVELOPMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY
LECTURE 20
DEVELOPMENT WITHIN THE FAMILY
OVERVIEW
•1. How much influence does family have on development?
•2. The family as a dynamic system
•Case study: family resilience
•3. Four parenting styles
•How are different parenting styles related to children’s outcomes?
•4. Why do siblings grow up with different outcomes?
1. HOW MUCH INFLUENCE DOES FAMILY HAVE ON DEVELOPMENT?
•Not only do your parents influence your development, but so do their parents and their parents
before that. Your whole heritage influences your development.
2. THE FAMILY: A DYNAMIC
SYSTEM
•Each member of the ‘family’ portrayed in the
painting can’t do what they’re doing without
the others there to hold them up. They are all
balanced together despite doing their own
activities. If any one of them was to move, the
entire organisation would be lost.
•Each character has to consider the mediation
between their own needs and the needs of
others in their family.
CASE STUDY: FAMILY RESILIENCE
•Persistent events: living in poverty etc.
•Disruptive transitions: divorce, having a new
baby, kids moving out of home etc.
•Family Belief System:
•Making meaning
•Hopeful outlook
•Transcendence (shared broader values; morals,
religion)
•Family Organisation:
•Flexible family structure (sharing/changing roles)
•Connectedness (knowing the family can protect you and you can
protect the family)/
•External supports
•Communication
•Clear information (being open and honest about
how you feel and what you need)
•Emotional sharing
•Collaborative problem solving (task oriented:
identifying a problem and working through it)
3. FOUR PARENTING STYLES
→ Diana Bornwright
•Demanding-ness: setting rules/boundaries
•Table on next page shows the results from each style.
