Lecture 5 - Photosynthesis
Photoautotrophs
● Undertaken by higher plants, multicellular algae, unicellular eukaryotes,
cyanobacteria, purple sulphur bacteria
Sunlight
● Ozone layer filters of most of the radiation (ie. no wavelengths of light below
300nm)
● Water vapour reduces infrared light waves
● Plants photosynthesis between 400-700nm
Photosynthesis overview
Chloroplasts - light dependant reactions
● Stomata are pores where gases (O2 & CO2) move in and out
● Stacks of granum exists to make sure light is captured in one of the layers
● Contain chlorophyll which gives the green colour to plants (located in
thylakoid membranes)
● Chlorophyll is a photon-trapping pigment captures red and blue light
○ Two types: a & b
■ A initiates light reaction
■ B and carotenoids are accessories
○ Reflect green light
○ Excited by sunlight (photons) and passes the ‘excitement’ throughout
the thylakoid/other chlorophylls

Document Summary
Undertaken by higher plants, multicellular algae, unicellular eukaryotes, cyanobacteria, purple sulphur bacteria. Ozone layer filters of most of the radiation (ie. no wavelengths of light below. Stomata are pores where gases (o2 & co2) move in and out. Stacks of granum exists to make sure light is captured in one of the layers. Contain chlorophyll which gives the green colour to plants (located in. Chlorophyll is a photon-trapping pigment captures red and blue light thylakoid membranes) Excited by sunlight (photons) and passes the excitement" throughout the thylakoid/other chlorophylls. Trap blue-violet light and reflect orange, yellow or red light. Light passed through chlorophylls until reaching p680 (in photosystem ii) Electron passed from split h2o to p680, releasing an o2. Light energy passed through chlorophylls that has reached p680 passes the electrons up to the primary electron acceptor. Passed through electron transport chain, yielding atp at the cytochrome complex. Electron then passed to photosystem i at p700.
