If the child displayed self control it"d act as a strong indicator of educational and economic success. For the children who couldn"t resist, it showed that self control can be taught. Children who delayed gratification were more successful later in life. Higher test scores at school and lower bmi. They argue that most people will commit crime unless there are factors that pull them back into conformity these forces may be biological, psychological, social factors. Argue that criminality is going to be natural and people who conform need explanation. Guiding question is why do people conform? rather than why do people break the law? . Individuals commit crime because of weaknesses associated with restraint. Not driven to be criminal but crime is a breakdown of controls. Sources of control - crime is a result of a breakdown in controlling forces. External punishment is applied for people who doing wrong thing and compliance may be rewarded compliance may be rewarded.
