Get mature eggs but that haven"t ovulated. Look for eggs in follicular fluid + then have to grow them. Use low oxygen labs because oxygen in just a normal room is too high. Oocytes are retrieved trans-vaginally with ovum needle attached. Once follicular fluid has been aspirated, oocytes are removed from fluid in an ivf chamber + Essential aa placed in culture media. Number of follicles does not equal number of oocytes retrieved: average oocyte number is around 8-10. Sperm are then washed with culture media and are ready for insemination. Depends on sperm quality or patient history (previous ivf cycles) In cases where semen quality is sub-optimal: single sperm drawn in fine pipette for injection into egg. Egg held steady with holding pipette: sperm is expelled into cytoplasm of egg + pipette is withdrawn from egg. Imsi been reported to improve embryo quality in patients with poor semen parameters.
