Natural or synthetic compounds that alter hormonal/homeostatic systems. 30/04/18: systems that enable organism to communicate with + respond to environment. Almost all areas can be affected brain, cvs, thyroid, reproductive systems. Impact are complex and subtle combined number of small effects: almost impossible to prove that any particular edc is causing change. Edcs alter reproductive function by activating: androgen, estrogen and progesterone receptors. Exact role of certain hormones is not fully defined. Interfere with foetal growth and development body"s organs + tissues are still developing. Toxicology = study of adverse effects of chemicals/physical agents on living organisms: says that above a certain dose a chemical is harmful. But edcs can have non-monotonic dose responses = biphasic. Edcs can have effects at low doses that are not predicted by effects at higher dose. Sheep were eating sweet clovers" instead of grass. Contained phytoestrogen excessively activates estrogen receptors.
