PSY3120 Lecture 5: PSY3120 Lecture note 5
Document Summary
Father of the behavioural approach to psychology. Championed radical behaviourism = places primary emphasis on the effects of environment on behaviour. Did not believe humans had free choice. Acknowledged that feelings and thoughts exist but denied that they caused our actions. Stressed that cause-and-effect links between objective, observable environmental conditions and behaviour. Work in the area of social modelling and demonstrated that modelling is a powerful process that explains diverse forms of learning. Explored social learning theory and prominent role of observational learning and social modelling in human motivation, thought, and action. Created one of the few mega theories that still thrive in 21st century = people need a sense of self-efficacy and resilience to create a successful life and to meet the inevitable obstacles and adversities they encounter. Practitioners focus on directly observable behaviour, current determinants of behaviour, learning experiences that promote change, tailoring treatment strategies to individual clients, rigorous assessments and evaluation.
