Role of the temporal lobe: hippocampus is located each of the temporal lobes. Consolidation & memory decline: memory consolidation is a category of processes that stabilize a memory trace after its initial acquisition. A memory trace is a change in the nervous system caused by memorizing something: consolidation theory is a physical and chemical change that allows memories to be permanently stored. It takes from 30 minutes to life for this process to be completed.
