Document Summary

Basic principles of drug addiction: drugs are usually administered in one of 4 ways: oral ingestion, injection, inhalation, or absorption through the mucous membranes of the nose, mouth, or rectum. = alcohol: drugs that are not readily absorbed or broken down into metabolites must take another route, adv: easy and safe, disadv: won"t know whether it"s absorbed properly. Inhalation: some drugs can be absorbed into bloodstream through the capillaries of lungs, tobacco and marijuana are administered by inhalation. It is difficult to measure/regulate the dosage of inhaled drugs and many substances damage the lungs if they are inhaled chronically. Absorption through mucous membranes: can be administered through the mucous membranes of the nose, mouth, rectum, cocaine is self-administered through the nasal membranes. Drug penetration of the central nervous system: once drug enters bloodstream, it enters central nervous system, blood-brain barrier makes it difficult for many dangerous bloodborne chemicals to pass from the blood vessels of the cns into its neurons.
