Lecture 12 - Viruses!
!
Discovery of virus
Tobacco disease!
a plant diseased caused by something smaller than a bacteria !
Named a “virus” by Martinus Beijerinck in late 1800s!
Size of virus
range from 20-400 nm !
Viral Genome size - 4000 - 400 000 nt !
Human genome size - 3 billion nt!
Structure of virus
Capsid: the protein shell that encloses the genome !
Envelope: only some viruses have envelopes. They !
are a membranous structure derived from the host cell!
Outside the cell, they are
inert macromolecules.
Inside the cell, they can
function.
obligate intracellular parasites
They can replicate to produce
progeny: the host cell can make
more viral cells and expel
thousands out into the cell
instead of following cell division
etc.
Evolve through mutation and natural selection
Each only contain one type of
nucleic acid; either DNA or RNA
Only have limited genetic
material: 4-300 genes
Can only replicate in living cells:!
employ host cell’s replicative and
metabolic pathways!
Do not have their own ribosomes or the
ability to produce energy
