Document Summary

Complexity between the lab and clinic: viruses and bacteria are only worked with in their respective field, eg. Virologists and bacteriologists only work with viruses and bacteria, respectively: minimal cross over, researchers only work with pathogens associated with disease, only work with one pathogen at a time. Need to consider a wide range of things. Target population: sick vs healthy, age, inclusion/exclusion, conditions. Method used to collect sample: bacterial culture (which will miss the bacteria that doesn"t grow in the lab), targeted qpcr (need to know target pathogen), microbiome analysis (huge data needing key information) Binary vs quantitative analysis: cut off for (+) and (-) or load quantification, must consider ranges complex analysis. 201 samples from qhps for respiratory infections aged from 1 week to 5 years old. Sample collected during rsv epidemic (seasonal rsv positives) Nasal pharyngeal aspirate (npa) was used to collect sample. Qpcr was used for detection and testing by pathology.
