Document Summary

Most plants are resistant to most viruses. Host range is determined by the interaction of the plant, vector and virus. Susceptible host: replication in wounded cell, cell-cell movement, systemic (long distance) movement. Plants induce volatiles to attract and detract specific insects: viruses can alter these to suit themselves. Factors affecting virus movement include: viral genes, plant genetic background (resistance genes, plant developmental stages, young more susceptible than old, envrionment. Pathways to virus infection: between cells, up and down xylem and phloem (vascular system of plant from movement of nurtients) Viruses can affect callose (eg. decrease it to fit through) Signalling: viruses encode mps that bind with viral rna to keep it stretched out in a linear form to move within pd. Gfp can visualise virus movement: viral mp is show to localise to the pds. Triple gene block : 2 membrane associated proteins (that go to the pd, rna helicase (that unwinds viral rna genome)
