Document Summary
Stress can be both a acute and chronic state. Common categories of examples of stressors are: physiological - stress is indicated by an unpleasant sensoric, emotional and subjective experience that is associated with potential damage of body tissue and bodily threat. Exercise/physical activity: psychological - stress is induced by situations of social threat including social evaluation, social exclusion and achievement situations claiming goal- directed performance. Instead the immediate response of the body to stress is generalised. A stress reaction is perfectly normal and it prepares the body to cope with the situation confronting it. Three stages: alarm, resistance & adaptation, exhaustion. When the threat or stressor is identified or realized, the body"s stress response is a state of alarm. During this stage, adrenaline will be produced in order to bring about the fight or flight response. Stress reaction activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal gland (hpa) axis and subsequently the release of cortisol.
