HUBS1406 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Extracellular Fluid, Fluid Compartments, Blood Vessel
Document Summary
Blood is a fluid connective tissue that circulates continually around the body. Colour: scarlet to dark red. ph 7. 35-7. 45: slightly alkaline. Nutrients from gi tract to all cells. Metabolic wastes for elimination (c02 from lungs, urea from kidneys). Hormones & drugs from their point of origin (or administration) to their sites of action. Fats from stores in adipose tissues to cells. Regulates body temperature by losing or gaining heat from the environment and distributing heat around the body. Regulates circulating blood due to the osmotic pull of its plasma proteins. Fight infection due to containing white blood cells, antibodies, etc. Contains clotting factors (proteins)+ platelets to form clots and prevent excessive blood loss when blood vessels burst. Consists of 92% water, 7% plasma proteins, 1-2% other solutes. Remain in blood as they are too big to escape (diffuse) through the semi-permeable. H20 also trapped in blood vessel due to osmotic pressure.
