Colonization → Easy to “Describe” (Through the 5 steps listed previously) – But it is important to
note that it is highly ritualised with enormous expectations on how things will go – if it deviates from
the norm, it is improper.
Herodotus starts talking about how the Persian wars started in book 5 of ‘The Histories’ with the
story of Aristagoras from Miletus travelling to Sparta, etc. Colonization explains the Athenians choice
to support the Ionians.
It is highly questioned whether colonization existed in the 5th century and YES it did. This links in to
the handout with the mentioning of warfare in particular.
