What do we mean by “decline”
- Problems with the “Periodization” of history:
- Labels like Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Greco Roman imply a seamless transition from period to
period. Is this really the case?
- Rise = inevitable decline
- E.g. Coming of Rome = fall of Greek polis
- “Greece” is not the Greek world. The umbrella term of “Greece” is applied to numerous city states
and communities.
- Romans adapted spaces to fit their imperial needs and to shape what they think Greece should be.
- Encroachment, appropriation, decline and identity are key themes throughout this lecture.
Athens Urban Landscape 100 B.C 150 A.D.
- Interactions with the Romans effected the architectural landscape

- Athenian Agora went from an open to a close space.

- Within looking at these monuments, there is a way of patterning it’s genesis. Within looking at when these
buildings were made, majority of them were made when a victory has occurred.
