BIOL1007 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Fibrin, Cytoskeleton, Hydrophile
Document Summary
Cells have existed for over 3. 5 billion years. Some cells have evolved complex structures and functions. For example, endocrine cells (no duct, they dump straight into the bloodstream or tissue) that can respond to homeostatic signals and release hormones. The little rope they use is a protein called fibrin, which is put across the wound and closes it. Cells don"t have as much space in them as diagrams suggest. Cells can last 3 hours with a hole in them. This is because of electroporation, by which the charges of the proteins in the cell attract the water and hold it all in the cell. Evolution doesn"t only choose the advantageous qualities, it just ensures that that not disadvantageous is kept. anything is. Any cell with a capsule has to be a prokaryote, probably bacteria. They may also have pilus (hair-like structures) which can lock in together between two bacteria, and transfer plasmids and genetic information.
