What are morals: code of conduct, necessary rules to maintain social structure, universally right or wrong, an emotion, avoidance of negative feelings, avoidance of punishment, evolution of survival. The feeling of conscience and the growth of moral understanding. Self conscious emotions: self awareness is thought to emerge at about 18 months- rouge/mark test, apes, dolphins and elephants can also past the rouge test. Identity formation is generally thought to consist in lessening of egocentricity and increasing of self-other differentiation: sense of self is required to become a moral agent. Lecture 8- moral development- rationalist: the answers they gave took a developmental sequence, become more clear as they developed. What is moral reasoning: cognitive component of moral development, working out what you should do in any given situation, kohlberg"s stages of moral reasoning. If someone is punished they must have done something wrong.
