Document Summary

Directional terms: caudal = tail = posterior. Parts of the brain: cerebrum, cerebellum, diencephalon, brainstem. Surface of the brain: gyri- folds, sulci- space between the folds, fissure- essentially larger sulci. Lateral view of the cerebrum- divisions: longitudinal cerebral fissure. Divides the two hemispheres of the cerebrum: central sulcus. Separates the frontal and parietal lobes: lateral sulcus/fissure. Separates the frontal lobe from the parietal and temporal lobes: parietooccipital sulcus. Separates the parietal lobe from the occipital lobe. Gyri: there are four main gyri in the frontal lobe, precentral gyrus. Extends to the precentral sulcus: superior, inferior, middle gyrus. The inferior frontal gyrus is divided into orbital, opercular, and triangular parts: orbital gyri, gyrus rectus. Involved in initiation of voluntary movement: premotor and supplementary motor areas. Remainder of precentral gyrus and adjacent parts of the superior and middle frontal gyri. Also related to initiation of voluntary movement. The premotor cortex decides what information goes into the primary motor cortex: frontal eye field.
