Who developed the dsm: developed by american psychologial association, dsm task force volunteers, 160 top researchers and clinicians worldwide, experts in, neuroscience, biolopgy, genetics, statistics, epidemiology, nosology, public health. Decision process for inclusions: culmination of collective clinical knowledge of experts in the field, evidence based research, advances in science of mental disorders. History of the dsm: published in 1962 - described 106 disorders, required consolidation and consensus among mental health professionals, 5 editions, why all the changes, mental health as a representation of the zeitgeist, psychotic episodes, anxiety, ocd. Main criticisms of the dsm: mental health is too complex to label, over pathologizing human experience. Self concept: will a diagnosis be helpful for this person, vested interests e. g. pharmaceutical companies (greenberg, 2013, therapist - cognitive blocking, reduction of self-agency empowerment over symptoms. Inter-rater reliability tricky/ not always perfect: e. g. diagnosis of personality disorders.
