Emotional develpoment: basic emotions directly inferred from facial expressions. Social smile: evoked by the stimulus of the human face, first appears between 6 and 10 weeks. Laughter first appears around 3 to 4 months in response to active stimuli. Fear: rises during the second half of the first year. Stranger anxiety: fear in response to unfamiliar adults; depends on, temperament, past experiences with strangers, the situation. Emotions - understanding and responding: 7-10month old babies, percieve facial expressions and emotional tone, match the voice to face of a speaking person. Social referencing: social referencing starts beyond 5 months of age, child relies on a trusted persons emotional reactions in uncertain situations, at the end of the second year child experiences: Injury or enhancement of the sense of self: understanding emotions helps to acquire calues of society; has implications for experiencing, shame, embarrassment, gui;t, envy, pride, empathy.
