Oxidation and Reduction (4)
Redox Reactions in Acidic and Basic Conditions:
In many redox reactions in aqueous solutions, H3O+ or OH- ions play an
important role
E.g. in the reaction of K3Cr2O7 with FeSO4 the acidity of the mixture decreases
o This is because the reaction uses up H3O+ as a reactant and produces H2O
o
Balancing Redox Equations in Acidic Solutions:
Identify reactants and products for each half reaction
Balance atoms other than H and O
Balance oxygen by adding H2O
Balance hydrogen by adding H+
Balance net charge by adding e-
Make e- gain equal e- loss
Example:
Half reactions
o
Balance reduction half
o
Balance oxygen by adding H2O
Balance hydrogen by adding H+
