Document Summary
Micronutirents i/ii: understand that vitamins are organic substances which cannot be synthesised by the human body and must be provided by a dietary source. People notices that some illnesses were rectified by ingestion of particular foods. Were discovered through looking at what could cure diseases- deficiency diseases. Definition: organic substances that cannot be synthesised by the human body, must be provided by a dietary source. Now know that vitamins are not all amines. They are all molecules that cannot be synthesised endogenously: know the fat and water soluble vitamins and understand how this influences their metabolism. Must be bound to intrinsic factor prior to absorption. Absorbed from micelles in company with dietary lipids. More likely to lead to hypervitaminosis: know the active forms of each vitamin, describe the metabolic and enzymatic pathways of specific vitamins, know the functions of specific vitamins, outline the biological effects over under/over supply of different vitamins. Biologically active vitamers are retinoids: retinol retinal retinoid acid.
