IMED2003 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Statistical Power, Systematic Review, Observational Study
Document Summary
The 5 a"s of research: ask a question, acquire the information, appraise the articles found, apply the information, audit/assess. Basic science vs clinical research: same but different, require the same approaches, basic sciences. The disease or intervention is assessed in a created environment: clinical research. Investigate diseases and/or interventions in humans: here we are referring to the clinical research, we have to get the fundamental science concepts from the clinical research. Types of evidence: not all types of information are equally useful, we look for evidenced that is relevant and valid, from peer-reviewed publications, systematic reviews, how do we identify them, study design. Different designs are needed to answer different research questions: consider possible study limitations and bias, statistical power. Did the study assess a sufficient number of patients/events. Is treatment a more or less effective than treatment b: pros, can detect small or moderate effects which other designs cannot do.
