Document Summary

In order to precisely turn on and off the correct sets of genes for each cell type, gene expression is regulated at many levels. Regulation of gene: differential gene expression from the same nuclear repertoire is accomplished by regulation at several levels, at every step there is something regulating it. Some factors influencing gene expression: signals, cell-cell contact, hormones (some have nuclear receptors- translocate into nucleus and act as tfs, morphogens. Many morphogens are transcription factors: transcription factors, proteins which bind to regulatory elements of a gene, control transcription, often synthesised or activated in response to external stimuli (above, 2 main categories: (e. g. hormone binding) Muscle development- it binds to its own promoter. It would turn more of tfs that would turn more of myod on. Activation of myod- so potent that if its too much- it will turn a fibroblast cell into a muscle cell.
