Document Summary

Allow us to live on dry land-- adaptation. Kidneys normally receive 20% to 25% of the cardiac output. Composition can change rapidly: kidneys help stay in homeostatic area. Kidneys maintain the composition of the extracellular fluid (ecf) within the narrow limits compatible with life. Body is 45-75% water depending on fat content more fat, less water you have. % of body weight that is water depends on the amount of fat. Female of average build--- 50% water (extra fat- hence overall less water) Tbw- total body water (1/3 ecw + 2/3 icw) Ecw extracellular water 20% plasma + 80% interstitial fluid. Urinary system: (kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra: goes to the kidneys via renal artery, and goes back to heart, to the vena cava via the renal vein, urine made in the kidneys, stored on the bladder. Maintain water balance in the body (lots of water, get rid of the water)
