Document Summary
A fear appeal is a persuasive communication attempting to arouse fear in order to promote precautionary motivation and self protective action. Perceived threat: perceptions about susceptibility to, and severity of, an undesirable harm. Fear: negatively valanced emotion, triggered by perception of threatening stimuli. Response ef cacy: beliefs as to whether a response effectively prevents the threat. Self ef cacy: belief in your ability to perform the recommended response. Threat is a cognition, while fear is an emotion. A certain amount of fear is good for attitude/action changes, but too much is bad and causes maladaptive responses. Danger control processes (cognitive: effects to control threat or danger, adaptive, as prompt protective action. Fear control processes (emotions: efforts to control ones fear about the danger, emotion focussed coping; reassurance via denial or derogation of message, maladaptive, as it doesn"t avert perceived threat. If it is moderate or high then ef cacy is evaluated.
