Document Summary

What is the importance of prenatal motility: cognitive development. Myogenic movements (pathway to development of neurogenic movement) Neurogenic movements (enables foetus to change position in utero, enables foetus to execute higher order functions: musculoskeletal development. Paralysis study (drachman & sokoloff, 1966) resulted in muscle atrophy and joint malformations. Movement enables muscles and joint to develop properly. Sperm and eggs each carry 23 chromosomes. Chromosomes carry genetic material that drive development. Gene defect may be present at conception or may be altered during pregnancy - dif cult to distinguish. Prior to 1990, study of genetics was limited. In 1990, the human genome project commenced - aim of determining what sections of dna (genes) responsible for certain conditions. Chromosome maps - screen for some genetic abnormalities during prenatal development: prostate cancer, colon cancer, eye disorders, muscle disorders, colon cancer, spinal abnormalities, cystic brosis. 8: melanoma, anaemia, eye disorders, lung disorders, breast cancer, cholesterol, down"s syndrome, brain/lymph tumours.
