SSEH3345 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Visual Search, Explicit Memory, Implicit Memory
Document Summary
Some form of attention is involved all other aspects of cognition, except when task performance has become habitual or automatic. Impact of a decline in attentional processes can, therefore, have, broad-reaching effects on one"s ability to function in everyday life. Hard to de ne but: selective attention, divided attention, attention switching. Selective attention refers to the ability to attend to some stimuli while disregarding others that are irrelevant to the task at hand. Slowed differentially by similar and dissimilar distractor items. Less able to use features similarity among non-targets to improve performance. Requires processing of two or more sources of information or the performance off two or more tasks at the same time. Older adults take longer to switch between tasks. Requires task preparation (working memory) as well as inhibition of information from previous task. Decline in performance in elderly (elderly choose or selectively prioritise, detrimental effect on other tasks) Visual search while driving, cognitive task while walking.
