Document Summary

Glucose is just one type of fuel used by cells. There are other important pathways of fuel catabolism. Glycogenolysis; the breakdown of glycogen: used to generate glucose. The liver stores a lot of glycogen: can provide glucose when required. Need to be converted to glucose if it is to be exported** Lipids are primarily stored & transported in form of triglycerides. Triglyceride: made up of 3 fatty acids attached to glycerol. Lipases break down triglycerides: fatty acids & glycerol are then taken up by cell. Removes 2 carbon acyl units from fatty acids & converts them to acetyl- Acetyl-coa then enters the citric acid cycle: generate atp & high energy intermediates. Proteins are used as a last resort for energy production. Proteins are broken down into amino acids. Amino acids are deaminated to remove the amino group (nh3) Carbon backbone is then catabolized for energy.
