Psychoactive substance = chemical or natural substances that alter consciousness; most often associated with substance abuse disorders. Classes of drug at risk for substance abuse. Compulsive need to increase exposure to a substance or to exhibit a behavior with strong potential for harm. Characterized by craving, loss of control, need for reinforcement and tolerance.
