At present, ncds cause more deaths than all other causes combined. Deaths are projected to increase from 38 million 2012 to 52 million by 2030. Generic term for >100 diseases including malignant tumors @ diff. sites. 57% (8 mill) of new cancer cases and 65% (5. 3 mill) of deaths occur in the less developed regions. Oral cancer is huge in morbidity and mortality but not prevalence. ~1 in 2 canadians will develop cancer during his/her lifetime. Every 3 minutes every day, 1 person will be diagnosed with cancer. Some melanoma and leukemia can be caused by infection. Men: prostate, lung, colon and rectum. Women: breast, lung, colon and rectum. Often a complex mix b/w accumulated exposure to risk factors and genetic susceptibility. Cancer is profoundly associated with socio-economic status (ses) Lifestyle (modifiable, non-modifiable: cancer generally increases with age (non-modifiable, family history (non- modifiable, alcohol, tobacco smoking, diet- overweight/obesity, sun (also environmental) and fake sun exposure.
