Very conservative: teaches/promotes critical thought, socialists like to view it as radical, can distort/ignore social issues but can also do the opposite, must know social imagination - look it up in the textbook. It is not the excitement of coming upon the totally unfamiliar, but rather the excitement of finding the familiar becoming transformed in its meaning. The fascination of sociology lies in the fact that its perspective makes us see in a new light the very world in which we have lived our lives. This also constitutes a transformation of consciousness. (peter berger, 1963: 21, found in introducing sociology by murray knuttila) The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them: capitalism = exploitation of labour, patriarchy = men cannot solve problem of patriarchy since it is a patriarchy. The purpose of education is to create in a person the ability to look at the world for.
