2016-09-17 9:15 pm: last week: recap, culture shock, a brief history of anthropology, emic and etic perspectives, ethnocentrism and cultural relativism, social evolutionism and historical particularism, primitive vs. advanced. Delaney: chapter 2: spatial locations , everyone is orientated in space, but the ways we understand that (and what we with/in it) are shaped by cultural ideas and social institutions, key idea: cosmology. Space and geography: space- the dimensions of height, depth and width within which all things exist and move, geography- the nature and relative arrangement of places and physical features. Example: spatial segregation in cities: legal reasons- before civil rights movement, there were places that were closed to black people and exclusive places for whites. Segregation-the action or state of setting someone or something apart from other people or things. Geographical segregation- where proportions of two or more populations are not homogenous throughout a defined space. Cyberspace: the theoretical (non-physical) environment in which communication over computer networks occurs.
