Trying to come up with a way of measuring how communications can be used. Adorno and horkheimer, came form institution at the university of frankfurt. Emergence of mass media 1920 - 1930"s, rise of hollywood, movies, tabloids. Advertising pays for production of radio shows, newspapers become inexpensive (both expose ads to a large audience) radio is dominated by monopolies. Both have incredible interest in the works of marx, they too believed that capitalism was contradictory, the conditions that produce prospects for wealth also produce that for poverty. Alienates people from their means of production, their process of life, their freedom. Dominant ideology, way of thinking, solution to problems. Adorno, the key to adopting marx" idea of emancipation is found through culture on an individual basis. Disconnect between a value a society says it holds and the ones which are really on display.
